Ever since we brought in the Sonos music system here at Georgia Home Theater, we have been extremely impressed, and so have our clients. Check out this quote from a satisfied GHT customer.

Eric,

Just wanted to send you a note to say that the Sonos System is one of the coolest things I have purchased in a long time. I still can’t believe how easy it was to set up. I set up a zone bridge in my office where my router lives and currently control the system in my home theater room and on my deck with both the Sonos CR200 controller and my iPhone. It actually only took about 15 minutes to be fully functional for all zones. It is so easy to use that even a caveman (or a wife) can use it.

Thanks as always for your high level of customer service!

Rick Hunter

My apologies to Rick’s lovely wife Annette, as she looks nothing like a caveman!

The Sonos system for those unfamiliar, gives music lovers the ability to access instantly a world of music, no matter where it comes from, your computer or the internet, or both. Easily have access to your iTunes library, Pandora Radio, Rhapsody, Sirius satellite Radio, Last FM, and literally tens of thousands of Internet Radio stations.

This system is a perfect add on to an existing audio system as an additional source, or build a multizone audio system effortlessly & wirelessly.

Please drop by to check Sonos out. I think you will give a great review yourself!

It’s not surprising that B&W has yet again hit a home run with their latest product offerings. Although the company is new to the headphone and computer speaker categories, you would never have guess that when you hear the new P5 headphones and MM1 computer speakers.

The P5 headphones, at $299, are perfect for around the house or travel. They are beautifully designed both cosmetically and sonically. They are an excellent match for connecting directly to an iPod / iPhone, or into your more sophisticated hi-fi system. Other than just setting out to deliver a great sounding pair of headphones, it is very apparent that comfort was at the top of the priority list. The P5’s give the feel of slipping on a tiny little pair of fluffy pillows that just happen to playback music!

At $499 a pair, the MM1 computer speakers may seem pricey for a “computer” speaker, but they are anything but a typical set of computer speakers. Very stylish in design, very compact in footprint, these will look just as good as they sound next to your desktop monitor. The audio performance is unbelievably good. Rich full sound that delivers plenty of bottom end. I have been VERY impressed!

We have both of these exciting new products from Bowers & Wilkins available for demo and ready to cash and carry right in time for Dad’s special day!

Make it a special one!

I am pleased to announce that Digital Projection is our go to front projection provider and have just installed in our showroom three exciting models.

M-VISION 1080P-260 Designed for rooms with ambient light. This projector is optimized for maximum lumens, and is well suited for multi purpose media rooms / conference rooms / sports bars. Don’t like to sit in the dark? This is the projector for you.

M-VISION CINE-LED This M-Vision projector operates with a revolutionary solid state, LED illumination system which typically provides an operational life of 60,000 + hours with no significant lumen degradation. Excellent Contrast / Deep Color Saturation / Enhanced Reliability / Environmentally Friendly ! With this many bullet points, how can you go wrong? Definitely the projector that has me the most excited.

TITAN 1080P-250 The Titan series from DP consists of a range of 3-chip DLP projectors that can offer a variety of brightness levels, flexible installation applications, and are for the theater enthusiast that will accept nothing short of top of the line.

Being both a huge fan of music and a drummer, it is quite often that I get asked the question “Who is your favorite drummer of all time?” The answer to that question is quite easy…….ME! In all seriousness, the answer is quite hard.

I typically am more critical of whomever is pounding the skins than the rest of the members of a band. It seems like it should be easy for me to come up with an answer but it is not. So for the time being I will think about drummers a bit more and instead answer over the next few months, who are my favorite lead vocalists, guitarists, and bassists. This month lets start with the guy in the band that gets the most attention anyway….the frontman. Here are my top 5 lead vocalists / frontmen of all time!

#5 Chris Robinson

As you will see as you make your way through my list, you will see a recurring theme in my favorite singers. Skinny, white boys with soulful raspy voices. Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes has learned quite a few lessons from each of them and has stood right up there with the rest of them as a true rockstar. With a career going back 20 years now, he has mastered the art of being able to lead his band through lenghthy sets of music that cover a wide range of feel. Bluesy boozy ballads, soulful funk rock, folky roots rock, to straight up kick you in the gut rock & roll. He does it all.

Through the years I have seen Chris Robinson either with the Black Crowes, his solo band New Earth Mud, or as a special guest singer with other acts at least 50 times and I never walk away dissappointed. His on stage presence is very animated and makes him almost as much fun to watch as he is to listen to.

Career vocal highlights for me include “No Speak No Slave” & “My Morning Song” from Southern Harmony & Musical Companion, “Cursed Diamond” & “Ballad in Urgency” from Amorica and “Girl From a Pawnshop” from Three Snakes and One Charm.

The Black Crowes will be making a two night stand at the Tabernacle here in Atlanta on November 19th & 20th as part of what could be their farewell tour, having announced an indefinite hiatus at the end of this year. Put it on your calendar and I can assure you that you will see me there.

#4 Steve Marriott

Here’s one is with I would have been turned on to earlier in my life. Steve Marriott was the voice of the Small Faces and then went on to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, which is probably one of the most underrated rock & roll bands of all time.

If you have heard Steve sing Humble Pie’s “30 Days in The Hole”, and have never seen what he looks like, you are probably shocked at his picture here. He sounds more like Aretha Franklin than the scrawny kid you see here.

Steve is long gone, so I will never have the pleasure to get to see him perform live, but Humble Pie gets plenty of playing time on my system at home. My advice to you if you don’t know Steve & the Pie is to immediatly go buy these albums. “Smokin”, and “Performance – Rockin the Fillmore”. These two discs will showcase what Marriott can do in both the studio and live.

#3 Robert Plant

Robert Plant is the voice of Led Zeppelin, the band that created the blueprint for hard rock and heavy metal. I still clearly remember the day that my father placed Led Zeppelin III on the turntable at our house, and changed the way that I would listen to music the rest of my life. The power of Robert Plants vocal on “Immigrant Song” was just incredible.

Listening back now to Zeppelin’s early albums, it is amazing to think about what it would have been like to hear that music for the first time in the late 60’s. They took the British trend of white boys playing American black man’s blues, and put their own spin on it creating a heavy, dark, and mysterious blues rock sound like no other. (listening to Dazed and Confused now)

After Zeppelin, Robert Plant enjoyed a very successful solo career, joined Zep guitarist Jimmy Page for project and here recently has teamed up with blugrass superstar Allison Krauss. The album “Raising Sand” with Krauss earned the two of them a total of 5 Grammy awards.

I am still hopeful that Robert Plant will warm up to the idea of a full on Led Zeppelin reunion tour, as both Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones seem up for the task. It would be the concert of a lifetime for sure.

#2 Mick Jagger

With swagger and stage presence like no other, Mick Jagger has kept the Rolling Stones at the top of their game for well over 40 years.

There is heavy blues in Mick’s vocals, as he and the rest of the Stones were influenced early by legandary American blues artists like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Little Richard. The Rolling Stones were actually rhythm & blues cover band in the beginning, but as they got to the late 60’s and into the 70’s, the band and Mick’s vocals developed a unique personality of their own. Somehow, Mick even makes singing in a falsetto pitch sound cool.

To hear Mick at his finest, be sure to pick up the soon to be re-released “Exile on Mainstreet”. The Stones classic will be available with 10 never before heard tunes! The collectors edition will include CD, LP set, and DVD.

#1 Rod Stewart

Although the latter part of his career has been a string of releases of old crooner cover tunes, it’s the early days of Rod’s career that has earned his the top spot in my list. Just as I love a crunchy sound of a guitar, his gritty, raspy, just smoked 3 packs of cigarettes sound has got me hooked.

Any fans of early Jeff Beck Group albums will certainly know what I’m talking about. Rod was just a young lad back then but sang with power and conviction, and had some fantastic talent backing him up. Beck on guitar, Ronnie Wood on bass, Nicky Hopkins on piano and Micky Waller on drums. To hear this classic lineup, check out the albums “Truth”, and” Beck-Ola”.

It was his days being the frontman for the Faces though that initially got me hooked on Rod. The Faces had everything I would ever want in a band of my own. They had the sound, the look, the attitude, and of course knew how to party and have a good time. Having left the Jeff Beck Group with Ronnie Wood to team up with the remaining members of the Small Faces, which Steve Marriott just left to form Humble Pie, the Faces left an impact on rock and roll that would inspire such acts as the Black Crowes, Guns & Roses and Lenny Kravitz to name a few.

Unfortunately their time as a band was too short lived, as Rod’s solo career took off and the Faces became more of a backing band for him. With Ronnie Woods departure to join the Rolling Stones fulltime, the Faces were done.

Rod’s early solo recordings still have that same feel that I loved from the Jeff Beck Group and the Faces. His albums “Every Picture Tells a Story” and “Gasoline Alley” are my favorites.

5/7 Van Morrison @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater

Not pretty to look at but beautiful to listen to, Van Morrison will take the stage at Alpharetta’s hot and still fairly new Verizon Wireless Amphitheater @ Encore Park. I could certainly do without ever having to listen to “Brown Eyed Girl” ever again, and although it will certainly be played, what keeps me listening to Van the Man is his fantastic catalogue of songs such as “Caravan”, “Into the Mystic” & “And it Stoned Me”. If you like Van, and have yet to visit Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, this is a great excuse to check it out. As far as outdoor concert sheds go, this place is fantastic.

5/15 Norah Jones @ Cobb Energy Center

Here’s one that’s easy on the ears & eyes. The lovely and talented Norah Jones will perform at another fairly new music venue the Cobb Energy Center. Having just released her latest album “The Fall”, Norah has hit the road with a completely new lineup of band members that is full of talent. This will be a great concert for a “date night” and my wife and I will certainly be in attendance. Hope to see you there.

5/29 Neil Young @ The Fox Theater

Definitely not easy on the eyes, and some say not easy on the ears as well, but Neil Young ranks right up near the top as one of my personal all time favorite songwriters / musicians. There are not many that have as extensive a career as Neil Young, having been part of Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Crazy Horse and as a solo artist. Known as the “Godfather of Grunge”, Neil Young’s performances are typically full of crunchy, raw, gritty rock & roll. Not this time around however. Neil is out touring a solo acoustic performance that will showcase his more gentle side. The show should be chock full of timeless classics, at a timeless classic of a venue to boot!

I said, how loud is LOUD?? I work in an environment surrounded by music and movie soundtracks. From subtle piano keys to loud explosions, I hear it all.

You should be able to enjoy your music and movies with the finest audio and video equipment, but don’t sacrifice your hearing by listening at damaging levels. Our inner ears contain microscopic hairs that vibrate along with our ear drums so that we can translate frequencies within the air pressure in to sound.

Normal conversation in a quiet room is registered at around 50 decibels. A decibel is a unit of measurement used to indicate how loud a sound is. Exposure to decibel levels above 80 for long periods of time could be permanently harmful to your hearing. Look at the bigger picture; stereos and home theaters are our least concerns (unless you listen to them at maximum volume). Most men like to use power tools, and those power tools can be LOUD. A typical lawnmower is 90 decibels, and a chainsaw is about 110 decibels. Protect your ears from that and you’ll spend more time enjoying your audio system.

Here are 5 tips from the House Ear Institute to help prevent further or permanent hearing loss:

Monitor your exposure time to sounds over 85 dB and take periodic 15-minute “quiet” breaks. Although the maximum time to safely be exposed to 85 dB is 8 hours, the maximum time to safely be exposed to 100 dB is only 15 minutes. See pie-chart for more information.

Avoid hazardous sound environments. If you have to raise your voice to be heard, you are in a potentially hazardous environment for your hearing. This includes loud music performances, operating power tools and driving with the windows down at high speeds.

Whenever you can’t get away from an extreme sound environment, wear hearing protection, such as foam, silicone or pre-molded earplugs, earmuffs or custom earplugs. Look for products with noise-reduction ratings (NRR) of at least 9dB. Most products provide a NRR of 22dB or greater. To hear music and conversation clearly, look for high fidelity hearing protection. They will reduce all sound frequencies equally, and can often make listening to music more enjoyable than without any protection. Shooter’s plugs combined with earmuffs should be used for hunting and target practice. All can be found over the counter at your local drugstore or sporting goods shop.

Move away from on-stage monitors or amplifiers. Position yourself so you are not directly in front of the speaker while performing or listening. Musicians should avoid practicing at performance levels when possible.

If you suspect hearing loss or notice sudden changes in your hearing or have ear pain, see an otolaryngologist (ENT) or otologist. Also, have your hearing tested by a licensed audiologist. Common hearing tests include the pure tone threshold test, the otoacoustic emissions (“OAE”) test, speech audiometry and the Hearing in Noise Test (“HINT”), which was developed by HEI scientists to assess how well you can hear speech in real world situations, where background noise is present.

Keep your ears healthy and you’ll enjoy your music for many years to come!

Some of my clients have recently asked about new products and upgrades for their home theaters and whole house audio / video systems. A light bulb went off in my head, because I just finished a large scale commercial project using a multi-window video processor. A multi-window video processor displays multiple sources on your TV simultaneously.

Are you constantly flipping between 2, 3, or even 4 different events during football, baseball, or racing season? We offer a great video solution that will transform your big screen TV or home theater projector into a sports bar. That means you can see all of your favorite games on the same screen at the same time! You can also configure the processor to display different sized windows based on which source you want to watch. Packages start around $3,995.

Click here to download or read the flyer…

To sum up many months of anticipation, the new Bowers & Wilkins 800-Diamond series loudspeakers…

ARE FINALLY HERE AND ON DISPLAY !!

Imagine your favorite recipe that you’ve been familiar with for years. Now picture this: you change one or two ingredients, and then… POW! you’ve just improved the flavor 10-fold! It’s not that your previous recipe was bad, but now the experience is much different. That is the experience I witnessed today with the new 800-Diamond series loudspeakers!

I don’t want to discount the performance of any previous B&W loudspeaker over the years by any means, because I own a previous series (CDM-9NT, about 8 years old) that still sound amazing. But the fact that the engineers at Bowers & Wilkins can improve on the previous premium 800-series with such a breathtaking new offering presents a statement that sets the benchmark once again, reminding us that they define the list of the absolute finest loudspeaker manufacturers in the world [and maybe even the universe!].

I want to share this experience, so I encourage all of you to listen to the new 800-Diamond series for yourselves. Even if you are satisfied with your existing speakers, I encourage you to listen to the new 800-Diamond series. And if you already own speakers from Bowers & Wilkins, you will grin with a cocky satisfaction that you own legendary speakers. It will shock you how amazing these new speakers really are.

One of the great things about being a homeowner here in the Atlanta area, is the fact that we have such a long season of temperatures to enjoy relaxing and entertaining outdoors.

Through the years, we have seen the quality of a typical backyard change tremendously. The size and detail of a swimming pool and hot tub, over the top outdoor kitchens, elaborate water features and sitting areas are all things that seem to be a focus of our clients building a new home, or backyard makeover project.

With all the great audio / video technology we provide throughout the interior of the home, why would you not want to take it outdoors as well? Georgia Home Theater provides quite a large range of outdoor audio solutions, from the traditional box speakers mounted to the house, to more camoflauged speakers that look like rocks, planters, or outdoor lighting fixtures. I myself have a multizone audio system at my house, and without a doubt the most used zone is our outside deck. Steaks on the grill, cold one in my hand, and good ole rock & roll to keep me company.

How about a weatherproof flat panel television from Sunbrite TV, or even a 100 inch projection Starglas screen from Stewart Filmscreen? We certainly don’t want to overlook the great outdoor video options available.

How will I control all of this while splashing around the hot tub or pool you wonder….well don’t worry as we have that covered too, with waterproof remote control options from Crestron.

There is no better time than NOW to pull the trigger on your outdoor entertainment upgrades, as the cold weather is now behind us and the flowers are blooming.

See you soon!

When using a single full-range speaker cable (not biwiring), the large amounts of bass energy carried withing the single cable has an adverse effect on the higher frequencies. In a BiWire setup, the cable feeding the higher frequencies no longer handles the large magnetic fields caused by the high current needed to produce bass. BiWiring does not affect the bass fundamentals, but allows the treble signal to now travel a less disturbed path. It’s a bit like the difference between swimming through waves versus through smooth water. Bass frequencies will sound better because bass definition is actually located in the midrange and higher frequencies.

It is always worthwhile to take advantage of the benefits of BiWiring when the speaker manufacturer has gone to the extra expense of providing this capability. The performance benefits of reducing distortion in this way are substantial!

Audioquest, our go to cable provider has a significant range of BiWire speaker cables available. Come visit our showroom to hear the advantages of BiWiring with your own ears.

Planning a new home theater can seem like a daunting task. What size screen? How much will it cost? Will it be easy to use?

These are just a handful of the typical questions I get asked when first meeting with a prospective client. Well today is your lucky day….usually I get paid the BIG BUCKS to offer up my advice, but keep reading and I will share 5 bullet points everyone should think about….FOR FREE!!

WHAT TYPE OF ROOM? Think about how you want to use your space. Should this be a dedicated “Theater Room”, or will you be best served with a “Media Room”? Do you plan on just using your room for family movie nights, or will you be the host of next year’s Super Bowl Party?

WHAT TO DO ABOUT NOISE? There is certainly a difference between sound enhancement & sound isolation. Most clients assume that acoustic panels on their walls will stop sound from traveling to other parts of the home. That is NOT the case. What they do is make the listening experience INSIDE the room better. Sound is kind of like water, in which it will find a way to seep through all sorts of nooks and crannies. There is a science to accomplish both enhancement and isolation. Good planning ahead will prevent someone upstairs pounding on the floor with a broomstick.

TO SEE, OR NOT TO SEE…..THAT IS THE QUESTION There are those that like to show off all their great new gear, and those that don’t. Myself personally, I enjoy seeing my speakers and electronics. It puts a big smile on my face looking at everything before I even turn the system on. My speakers for example are great conversation starters for first time guests to my home. Others however, prefer for everything to be more discreet, with equipment tucked away in a dedicated equipment closet, and speakers architecturally hidden in the room. Neither scenario is wrong or right, you just need to decide which category you fall in.

HOW WILL LIGHT AFFECT MY THEATER? Light sources in a theater room, whether from sconces, cans, lamps, or sunlight coming through the window, will affect the performance and mood. Light is like cryptonite for projectors, and who wants to watch a movie with the lights on, or in the complete dark. Plan ahead on how to properly place and control lighting in the room with remote controlled dimmers. Too many windows? Not a problem. We have manual & motorized “black out” shading solutions.

NOT JUST FOR MOVIES! There are many ways to enjoy your theater / media room other than just watching movies. My theater room gets its heaviest use during football season and card night with the boys. Video gaming is not just for kids anymore. Gaming systems like Wii and Rock Band or Guitar Hero, can be good interactive fun for the whole family. Also try to imagine your theater as you children’s personal “performance hall”. Great venue for the little ones to give concert recitals, puppet shows, dancing, etc.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to pulling off the perfect theater, but hope these points are good food for thought. Please stop by or schedule a consultation to really get things rolling.

Eric Joy

One more, and this is my most valuable piece of advice. Always keep in mind that this project is about FUN! If at any point things get frustrating, confusing, or overwhelming……TAKE A BREAK!

Enter your email to subscribe to our blogs:

With each passing year, we continue to see the trend of eliminating big floorstanding speakers in a dedicated home theater grow. Emphasis on cosmetics, and maximizing floor space has become a top priority for our clients today. Thankfully, our go to speaker manufacturer Bowers & Wilkins, is making it a priority as well, without sacrificing performance.

Meant to be heard and not seen, the B&W CT700 series is size and budget friendly, yet incorporate technology found in their most advanced speakers.

Our system NOT on display here at GHT consists of three CT7.4 as L/C/R and two CT7.5’s for surrounds, all built into the columns of our room. Behind the front wall, we pack the powerful punch of two CTSW10 subwoofers. Because the subs are powered by an external amplifier, they have a depth of only 10.3 inches. Your wife, just like mine, will appreciate not having that big subwoofer sitting out on the floor.

Also on display in the CT series are the CT8.4, and coming soon the CT8.2!

I personally like to see my theater speakers, my wife does not. The B&W CT700 series makes it OK for me to let her be the boss.

Now available for test drives!

Hope you have all made it alright through the brutal cold spell and snow of recent weeks. Just wanted to check in and fill you in on happenings here at GHT.

In addition to new products from Bowers & Wilkins that will soon arrive (new 800series, new inwall / inceiling / headphones / computer monitor speakers), we have recently added a handful of new vendor partners to our lineup.

SONOS

Got music in your computer that you would love to easily pipe into your stereo system, or around the whole house? This is the most user friendly, and very cost effective way to get music from your iTunes, Rhapsody, Pandora, Sirius, etc from point A to B. You must stop by to check this out!

CUDDLEBAGS

This is not your typical beanbag from the 70’s. With bags that are perfect for videogaming kids, to bags large enough for a family of four, these are perfect for extra seating in your theater or kids playrooms.

VIP CINEMA SEATING

We are pleased to be partnering with this fantasitic seating company. Need new theater seats? We took delivery of 4 new styles this week and are super impressed with the build quality. Come in and check them out, they look and feel great. Made in the USA and built to last!

TOUCHSTONE LIFTS

Everyone has a flat panel television these days, so the way to set yours apart from the crowd is to dress it up nicely. This is not your typical A/V furniture. Great for the living room / den, or fully finished on all sides for the end of the bed in your master suite.

AUDIOQUEST

We finally have a full service interconnect / cableing provider. With a wide range of products to fit any budget, I challenge you to compare the difference of audioquest with what you currenty have in your system. Fantastic HDMI, audio cables, power cords, speaker cables and more.

DIGITAL PROJECTION

Front projection specialists! With their North American headquarters located just up the road in Kennesaw, and their award winning lineup of projectors, we are absolutely thrilled to be doing business with Digital Projection. They have the best range of special application projectors around. High Brightness projectors for well lit media rooms. LED projectors that will never need a lamp changed. 3D reference projectors.

INTEGRA

We welcome back to our mix Integra electronics. They are a leader in the A/V receiver market. Need a convenient HDMI jack on the front panel? Got it. Ready for 9.2 surround sound? Integra is. If you feel the need to upgrade your receiver, this is THE brand to choose.

We hope 2010 is treating you well so far, and look forward to seeing you soon!
